OpenAI is challenging a court order requiring indefinite storage of ChatGPT output data, citing conflicts with user privacy commitments. The dispute stems from a New York Times lawsuit alleging unauthorized use of copyrighted content for AI training.

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, publicly condemned the data preservation mandate as a threat to user privacy. "We will resist any demand that compromises our Core principles," Altman stated on X, accusing the Times of acting in bad faith.

The case represents a growing conflict between AI developers and content creators, with multiple copyright holders filing similar claims against tech firms. Legal experts suggest this ruling could establish precedents affecting how AI companies handle training data and outputs.
